Color Blind And Celebrating It

A lot of people are color blind. There are colors that really stand out and there are colors that don't. Not being able to identify all the colors are a source of frustration to some because they can't see the world as colorful as most other people do.

Some who are impaired by color blindness simply accept their situation without doing anything positive about it. This is definitely not the case of Mayor Andy Cook of Westfield Indiana, who is color blind.  

Being color blind, yellow is the only color that he can really see well. So to celebrate his inauguration, their theme was yellow as they celebrated the Mayor's Yellow Tie Ball. There were splashes of yellow in everything during the ball. From the men's ties to the women's dresses to the cakes, everything had yellow accents. Even the wine glasses had yellow ribbons.

Everything the Mayor owns has a touch of yellow, from his backpack to his car and even his house. This just shows that color blindness should not hinder a person from being the best that he can be. As they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Blind Spots

Color blindness is hereditary in nature. This means that if your father or mother is color blind, there’s still a chance for you or your children to be color blind as well. 

But how would you know if your child is color blind? According to this site, children can be diagnosed with color blindness at the age of 4. During this time, teaching becomes more visual, and children are educated on the basic rainbow colors. When a child has difficulty identifying the colors (usually between blue and green), then it may be best to have your child checked for color blindness by your pediatrician.

Early detection can help children identify colors such as blue, red, green or yellow without much difficulty. This is important, especially as teaching methods become more and more visual these days.

Shifting Career Gears

A lot of people give up their dreams the moment they’re diagnosed to be color blind.  Admittedly, there would be careers that a color blind person cannot pursue but this does not mean that it is the end of their dreams.

Take for example Jeff McMahon. He thought that being color blind would be the end of his desire in helping people. He wanted to be a Doctor so he took up premed in College. When he learned that he was colorblind, he decided to shifted his gears from medicine to helping people with their health and fitness.  

He is now the head trainer for Urban Active Fitness after getting his certification through the American Council on Exercise and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. And now he says that seeing his clients happily share with him that could now fit into their clothes because of his help as a fitness trainer is worth the career shift.

As with any other challenges in life, being color blind is not the end of everything. It is just another challenge for people to look at things in a different color. Read more about Jeff’s story here.
